Ashbourne will have a new cycle network constructed by Fox Civil which will last for over a year on the northside of town.
The R135 Cycle Network Scheme Ashbourne Northern Section is 2km in length, located to the north of Ashbourne town centre.
Work will begin at Dunnes Stores on Frederick street, and will be finished at the Pillo Hotel beginning on Monday April 11th and ending midway through 2023.
This will include new footpaths, eco-friendly LED lighting, cycle lanes and junction layouts at Castle Street and Johnswood which will be pedestrian friendly with safe crossing points. New traffic signals will be installed along the R135 at the Ballybin, Castle Street and St John’s Wood junctions. Underground utilities underneath the carriageway will also be upgraded while works are underway.
Cllr. Alan Tobin said in a Facebook post these “improvements are designed to enhance and improve our wonderful town.”
“The investment is about €8m and the southern side of town from Deerpark to the 9er will follow after this project is completed,” Tobin continued.
They’ll be delivered on a phased basis to minimise disruption on the 2km section from Dunnes Stores to the Pillo Hotel roundabout. The works will be delivered in seven phases to lower disruption in Ashbourne and is the reasoning for the project’s long construction time.
This upgrade is part of an Urban Regeneration Development Fund announced last year
